Adventuring Into Basketry #2, 1981

Here's an actual request fulfillment - issue 2 of Neil Burrows' and Andrew Hulme's AIB (featuring contributions from Monica Bryce, Jonathan Tait, Anna Watson, and Roger Horberry). A wonderfully well-rounded fanzine, issue 2 sees: interviews with Pigbag, The Raincoats, The Comsat Angels, Crispy Ambulance; Submerge Funk One and Submersibles Funk Two focus on "funky Music" (Haircut One Hundred, Heaven 17, Level 42, Blue Rondo A La Turk, Spandau Ballet); reviews of LPs - David Thomas & The Pedestrians, Dislocation Dance, The Diagram Brothers, WNW6 compilation (Artery, Out On Blue Six, The Pinkies, The Room, Dr. Mix & The Remix), Matt Johnson, Depeche Mode, Girls At Our Best, New Order, Ian Dury, Poison Girls, Jowe Head, Richard Earl - 7"s- Method Actors, Vivien Goldman, Lora Logic, Virgin Prunes, Girls At Our Best, Fallout Club, Pigbag, Scritti Politti, Rip Rip & Panic, The Associates, 23 Skidoo, The Cure, Dif Juz, Cabaret Voltaire, The Comsat Angels, John Marlon, Blackouts, Stephen Mallinder, Dance Chapter, Artery, A Certain Ratio - Gigs - Depeche Mode/Blancmange, Linx, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Altered Images, Rip Rig & Panic, Heaven 17; and Spitfire Parade (that's the AIB playlist in Basketmaker's parlance). The lovely lot of it neatly squeezed into 12 perfectly formed pages...hear me hear me - heaR ME HEAR ME!

Hi Chris - apologies for the slack reply - just dashing in and out of the blog to keep it afloat (will find more time for it soon I hope). Sorry to hear you can't make the ATM do. I'm sure there'll be some record of the event. I'm sure we'll catch up soon.

And yes indeed - it's great to see DaveO active with some pearls.

All the best

Wow, a big thanks for sharing this! Coincidentally, a mate of mine (who was a year or 2 older than me - crucial back then, of course) saw Crispy Ambulance's show at the Ad Lib (?) & would frequently regale me with descriptions of their chaotic genius - it took me ages to find any of their records, I think I ended up buying his copy of The Plateau Phase off him in the end! :)

It's a pleasure Rooksby - thanks for the positive comments. I never saw Crispy Ambulance - would have loved to - and like you I had difficulty getting hold of their records, but being a solid John Peel band it was always a pleasure to hear them on his show - - Deaf remains one of my faves.

Anyway, I will post the other 3 AIBs so do keep an eye out for those.

All the best

Damn, this is throwback stuff. Have you posted the other AIBs? :)

Not yet, Jonathan. Are you a Tait perchance?

That would be me, yes. Do I know you? :)

Actually, Jonathan, I have posted AIB#1 (http://si-site-nogsy.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/adventuring-into-basketry-1-1981.html).

No I don't know you but guessed that you might be associated with AIB. Do you have any objections to your work appearing here?

I have the full run (I think ) of AIB - I wil be posting more if there are no objections. Would you like to share some of your memories of putting the fanzine together? It'd be ace to include such recollections in the next AIB post.

All the best

I don't mind at all :)

But as you say above, it was Neil Burrows' and Andrew Hulme's magazine. I didn't have anything to do with production. I just contributed a couple of things to it. (We were at sixth form college together at the time.)

Cheers, Jonathan. Are you still in touch with Neil and Andrew?

Would it be possible to take an email address for you? I'll drop you a line when I come to post AIB#3.
