Oh yes, it's another cracker. Quentin 'Norman' Cook's, Andrew Thomas' and Ian Laidlaw's Peroxide ticks all the boxes offering practical advice, good writing, neat layout, great use of graphics, cool photos and multiple entreaties for punters to get involved. The 2nd and last issue acknowledges the encouragement and input from fellow fanzine writers so I'll be sure to post that at some point. Really, the only downside with this smasher is that only 2 issues saw the light. Issue 1 is packed with entertaining interviews and articles (the thorough 'what to do with a demo' piece must have proved very useful to budding bands and musicians). This poem does not realise

appearances are not enough -

It's got to MEAN something

whether it's whispering or screaming!

This poem does not have a heart

just a minimal calculating brain

getting away with masquerading tricks

which it uses time and time again.

Too many poems are murdered by posing pens

which stab like knives - Penknives!

That's a clever literary joke

hiding the fact that this poem has no life!

This poem could be screaming blue murder

at all injustice and inequality

but it gives out not a murmur........

This poem is devious;

It's content to have no relevant content

It's just sitting on the fence

and if it did have a message

it wouldn't make any difference;

who listens to poetry anyway?

It's only preaching to the converted.

Poetry won't change anything -

those who do not choose

to hear the whispers and screams

can ignore the truth and rage

by not even opening the book

to see the seething page.

SO THIS POEM DOESN'T EVEN TRY -

and if this poem was torn up, burnt, destroyed!

It would be no real loss

because this poem has given up -

I reckon that sets the tone of this post nicely. Atilla The Stockbroker thought it a suitable salvo too - it being the opening poem in his ripping Tirane Thrash. You'll find issue 1 of that caustic zine below along with a teeming trove of rantabulous delights. I've tried to cover the broadest range of poets & ranters as possible and barring the inevitable slippages from my crowded-out memory I've accounted for all those I can remember. Mark Schlossberg's, All The Poets lends us our title and given the alphabetic listing kicks us off in considerable style. Obviously there had to be some John Cooper Clarke and it must be said, Barney Bubble's JCC Directory 1979 is a brilliant publication. Naturally, influential stuff from Andy T et al is well accounted for. At any rate the anarcho strain of poetry had a huge impact on yours truly. Mick Turpin's, Another Day Another Word partially covers the Skinhead poets - excellent examples of which can be heard on the early Oi LPs, with Garry Johnson perhaps being the exemplar in the field (imo). True, the bulk of material here is testament to the virulence of the ranting rash that spread throughout the UK between '81-'84. Additional to the charmingly threatening cast of well-known ranters there ought to be a passing nod to the innumerable individuals taking to the nation’s stages for impromptu performances - some nervously wielding hastily scrawled screeds and others with just a head full of anger and a tongue willing to tell it straight. It’s probable that most cities and towns had unrecorded outbreaks of the ranting bug. To illustrate, Bradford is well represented here, boasting as it does such luminaries as Seething Wells (RIP), Nick Toczek, Joolz, Little Brother, and Wild Willy Beckett (RIP). But off the top of my head I can also cite from that fair City Rudi the Poet, Tony Palmer, and Jacko as incessant ranters for whom little or no documentary material remains. So this is in no way an attempt to anthologise the whole of the ranting movement - that'd be as preposterous as trying to record the entirety of fanzine output. As ever, contributions most welcome. Great one here from Mark Schlossberg, Billy Carless and John Tottenham. Worth noting, Mark had an earlier hand in Skum fanzine circa '77. Three issues of ATP saw the light between '79-'80. I also have issue 2 which will appear here eventually.

Andy T Poems, 1981

Andy T's contributions to the Bullshit Detector compilation hugely influenced me and the kids around my neck of the woods. The Weary of the Flesh 7" for Crass Records saw Andy hitting a striking stride with a simply startling collection of poetry. All of that and more is collected in the thrumming pamphlet, Andy T Poems. The second of these publications is a seriously classy affair and is something of a collective effort featuring great collage work alongside the poetic contributions from Andy, Claire, Pam Demonium, Sioux, and Lee (see Anathema #1, Anathema #2, and Spitting Pretty Pikktures for a fuller view of Lee's impressive output). A right belter I tell ya! Andy remains vitally active as ever - catch him if you can.

Another Day Another Word, 1982

'Welcome to Another Day, Another Word. Hope you enjoy reading it because there's been a lot of hard work gone into it. Originally this fanzine was just meant to be a showcase of Mick Turpin's - Merseyside Poet - work (though at least half the poems in this fanzine are his). But, I decided to invite a few of the best up and coming poets in the country to contribute some of their work to this fanzine. I personally think that all the contributors here are shedding new light onto a scene that has been dominated by old sixties has beens and more recently John Cooper Clark and Linton Qwesi Johnson who have dominated poetry since the 76/77 Punk explosion. As Swells would say 'RANT AGAINST RELICS' and I hope this fanzine is a little help in giving Poetry/Rant a 76/77 style shake up'.

John Cooper Clarke Directory 1979

I'm fairly certain this is the first piece of Barney Bubbles to crop-up on EE - which is surprising really given the incredible amount of work BB churned out. Thing is, since BB pretty much never signed his creations it is possible that something has sneaked through uncredited. Anyway, The JCC Directory is a brilliant vehicle for the Salfordian bard's ace poetry and is neatly furnished throughout with Kevin Cummins, Tom Sheehan, and Paul Slattery photography.

This dark beauty is credited to Sri Dred Nana and Notkotts which I think translates as Andy Palmer and T42 (Freddie 'Seaman' Stockton), both of whom to a greater or lesser degree formed part of Crass. In keeping with Exitstencil Press productions The Eklektik is an exquisite piece. Treat yourself and just luxuriate in its sumptuousness.

I managed to get my mitts on another issue of Negative Reaction and a fine edition it is too. Jon Romney, Wendy Shock, Dave Burnett, Andrew Duncan, Chris Green and Jimmy Olsen offer up some decent interviews with The Clash, Richard Hell, Mink DeVille, and The Soft Boys - all accompanied with Chas Diamond, Ivor Fried, and Sheely Weels' snazzy photos. Elsewhere there are reviews of The Roogalator, Eno, Fast Breeder, Deke Leonard/Iceberg (live); articles on The Zip-Tones (featuring Charlie Chainsaw), Reggae, and Dada; cartoons from Ignatz Ersatz and Jon Romney; charts and a smashing advert for The Art Attacks, I am a Dalek/Neutron Bomb. Completely riveting reading.

There's a pointer back to the last post in this V Sign - editor Les comments on a particular short piece: ‘this bit hasn’t worked, KYPP#2 has some of my feelings put into words but I can’t do that very well – it all sounds too obvious’. Peer referencing was something of a theme and it's one of the charms of these fanzines; the dialogue among them - the encouragement and camaraderie, the barbs, feuds and spats. Les’ caveat aside, the bulk of V Sign #3 is smashing with some quality interviews and extended live reviews. Frankly, a no show for Kill Your Pet Puppy would be recklessly remiss of ee. Like R.E.M., KYPP sits comfortably in the firmament of exceptional zines (imo). Aesthetically delightful; every issue of KYPP thrums with colourful appeal, an appellation editor Tony D. nailed thoroughly with his earlier bona fide classic, Ripped & Torn. Undoubtedly, an adept hand was at the tiller here, but as Tony noted, ‘there’s no technique that I used in printing this that you couldn’t do – it’s been put together on the floor with felt pens, glue & scissors’. Ahhh, that good old cut and paste of yore and honest to goodness encouragement to boot. Of course, visual attraction alone does not make for a quality zine and happily KYPP’s vivid palette is easily equalled by the verve and zing of its written content. Anyway, enough of my gobbets, for a far fuller appraisal see the KYPP site here. Also, you can have a look at the full run of KYPP here (there's also tons of fabulous ephemera there for you to feast upon). Excitingly, Tony D. has also made the full run of R&T available here. Topper stuff indeed! #1 of KYPP, compiled in collusion with the Puppy Collective (Val, Brett, Phillipe, and Jeremy) features: Adam & The Antz, Tuinal, Crass (a reproduction of the pamphlet Crass/Poison Girls’ issued after the disastrous Nov ’79 Conway Hall gig + KYPP’s critical take on that event); Jeremy Gluck’s, ‘Pop Fans of The World Unite; and cranking up the Crass quotient, a 1 page Stations of the Crass review. As Tony acknowledged, ‘it’s a bit skinny (18 pages) but at least it’s not padded out’ with crap. Right on!

Rapid Eye Movement wasis a brilliant fanzine. Sadly departed R.E.M. ed. Simon Dwyer's inspired delving yielded-up a celebrated corpus sublime. Mining a rare seam, Simon hewed from a fissure where music, politics, culture and the occult converged ('Occulture'); always deftly swerving the decent into accursed obscurantism. He'd go on to do a stint at Sounds and eventually launch 'Occulture' in earnest with the 1989 publication of Rapid Eye vol. 1 - this lavish artefact earned Simon his many plaudits. Of interest here though are the 3 early issues of Rapid Eye Movement featuring collaborators Alan Anger, Mick Dwyer and Lol Loveitt. These fanzines soar way above most other contenders, primarily on account of their searching interviews; check out the in-depth chats with Scritti Politti, The Piranhas (5 pages apiece), Patrik Fitzgerald (7 pages), Tony Parsons & Julie Burchill, and Mark Perry, and you soon get the picture. There's a profile on the Bridge House (Canning Town) namechecking gaffers Tony Murphy, Glen Murphy & Jon McGeady + mentions for Bridge House Records recording artists Rebel, The Tickets, Dogwatch, and a brief review of Mod's May Day '79 comp. There are short pieces on Nicky & The Dots (Simon's bro Nick's band), and Chelsea, which includes a review of The Slab. Jamming editor Tony Fletcher reckons #9 was probably the "best issue ever...in terms of pure fanzine energy and confidence". It's difficult to quarrel with his assessment - but then, every issue of Jamming brimmed with 'energy and confidence'. I made a right pig's ear of the last editorial, so this time I'm not gonna bother, this might be the last Vague but you haven't heard the last from us...

Well it certainly wasn't the last we heard from Tom: Vague's run stands at 64 and counting (1-15 Post-Punk Fanzines, 16-27 Cyber-Punk Manuals, 28-64 London Psychogeography Reports); factor in writings elsewhere, Vaguerants & extensive contributions to the HistoryTalk Notting Hill Timeline, and it's clear, Tom's had his tuppence worth and there's no sign of the man clamming-up yet. Amongst The Vagrants for V14 were Mick Mercer, Steve Rawlings, Ian Death Cult, The Skyboy, Emil Escape, Erica Echenberg, and Tom's Mam. In keeping with previous issues, V14 is a fantastically vibrant article. Eye-poppingly entertaining and infuriating by turns - - it may be Vague but it's never dull. 12 pages are given over to Southern Death Cult - including an extensive interview, 2 page photo spread and a gig by gig review of the 'Fuck the Fat Bastard Tour'. Elsewhere: The Dancing Did; 13th Chime; an address from Danse Society' Steve Rawlings; Pete Scott's, 'Work. N.O. Fuck Work'; Garry Bushell pisstakery, and 'anarcho-glue-punk-zine-negative-bor-inggg-politicoshit' takes a kicking.

Oh, and here's some really great news, Housmans still have V14 in stock at 2 quid a pop! It's a right bargain - go on, snap one up.

WELL, NO DOUBT YOU'RE ALL OVER THE MOON TO DISCOVER THAT WE'RE STILL GOING AFTER THREE ISSUES, BUT WHEN YOU CALM DOWN ENOUGH TO TURN THE PAGES YOU'LL REALISE WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY THIS ISSUE REALLY IS - STILL AT LEAST WE'RE TRYING...

Self deprecation was a stock-in-trade for many fanzine producers - probably working on the premise that it's better to stick the boot in on yourself before some other sod sticks theirs in. Anyway, Bath based Spuno (name derived from an inverted Sounds masthead with the initial S dropped) is largely a rake of live reviews, mostly from Bristol Trinity. That said, there's a good range of bands featured: Magazine, Bauhaus, The Photos, Toyah (+ mini interview), Slade/The Rules/Scoop, Crass/Poison Girls, Au Pairs/Essential Logic/John Cooper Clarke/The Pop Group/The Slits/The Raincoats, Adam & The Ants, The Interesting Tents, The Undertones/The Moondogs/Dolly Mixtures, Warhead, Smegma, The UK Subs, The Beat/Motion Pictures/Bim, Electric Guitars/Exploding Seagulls/TV Eye, and Echo & The Bunnymen. Reviews of The Great Rock 'n Roll Swindle, Animals & Men, Any Trouble, Lilliput, Bow Wow Wow, The Toys, The Silver, Hybrid Kids, and Glaxo Babies. + there's charts (local/national), news on Three & a Half Buckets of Water, Scoop, Midnight To Six, Genetic Postman (Zip Guns), and Ultimate Dance. The Vilest Form of Communication

I real hefty piece is TG#5 - weighty in page count and content. Mike hammers home some strong and sustained commentary on the family/parenthood, socialisation, anarchy, the mass media, the army and conscription -'Civil Defence is a Shallow Pretence' being particularly prescient; foregrounding as it does the mainstream media's penchant for championing military misdaventurism - just as they do still - see how the BBC et al dutifully demonise the official enemies and lead the cheers for NATO slaughter in Afghanistan and Libya - 'A Reality of Horror' indeed. Elsewhere there's lyrics from The Eratics, Poison Girls and Crass. Annie Anxiety contributes 'Das Ist Der Heil Das Sie Briggen' (This is the Healing they Bring) + there are several pages from Throbbing Gristle and a liberal sprinkling of sloganeering and collage .

There were 2 edition of TG#5 though there is no difference in content - 2 pages rendered in standard type rather than the 50% reduction account for the 2 page difference across the editions - Oh, and the Second Edition was A3 folded and saw a 20p price increase. TG#5 also featured the scintillating Crass Flexi, Tribal Rival Rebel Revel - its inclusion sent circulation into the stratosphere. Absolutely fantastic throughout.

Right, so now we have a far fuller picture of N.R.R./TG courtesy of the good folk at Kill Your Pet Puppy - huge thanks to Chris Low for delving into his archive and sharing this fascinating letter from Mike Diboll:

Toxic Grafitty started life as 'No Real Reason' named after the line in 'holidays in the sun' the first issue went out in Oct '78 with a circulation of 50 copy, eventually this went up to 200 copys and the March '79 issue was to contain one of the earliest Crass interviews done by a fanzine, along with Poison Girls and the Wall, and lots of writeing about my own opinions. Unfortuneately I was stopped by the old Bill when I had a copy of that issue, and they 'threw the book at me' for every petty traffic offence that they could think of, confiscated the copy of the the zine, threatened me, and said if they saw the title on the street, or me with it, I would have 'an accident'. So I decided to change the title to Toxic Grafitty which I thought up on the spur of the moment, and I thought it summed up the content of the zine at the time. That summer Crass, Poison Girls and the Epileptics (A.K.A. 'Flux OF Pink Indians') did a benefit gig for the zine at conway hall in centeral London, which raised about £200, that summer the zine reemerged under it's new title and sold 500 copys, another sucsessfull issue came out in December '79 featuring stuff by Crass, Eratics, Epileptics, rubbela ballet and the heretics, this issue sold about 1,000 copys, and gained it a reputation as being a particularly anarchistic zine.

arround that time I started to talk to Crass about the idea of collaberateing with a zine/flexi-disc package, this zine, like all future copys of T.G. was to have no interviews, just oppinions, graphics, articles, and the occasional set of band lyrics, this zine was due to come out that summer, but the project was, and still is, beset by printing difficults and procrastinations, so the zine didn't appear untill the begining of 1981, when it did apper it was in the form of a 47 page anarchist zine ,with no adverts, and the exelant Crass song Tribal Rival Rebel Revels, recordedd on extra thick flexi material so as to make the sound quality as close to that of a 'solid' record as possible, and with some anarchist stickers, the price 50p, which is good value page for page compared with cheaper zines. So far I have sold 20,00 copys, the record opening up an otherwise unobtainable markets for the zine.

The idea of my magazine, I prefere that title to 'fanzine' cos I don't like the 'fan' part of the word, is to promote my views and those of others like me in an as uncompromiseing wau as possible, and to a wider audiance as possible, the content is unashamedly anarchist/pacsifist, and aims to get the reader to look at the shit they see around them in a new light, I belive in is up to people form their own oppinions, TG does not seek to try to indoctrinate people, but to give anarchist thought a wide airing, which the conventional media refuses to give it. I stopped doing interviews and thing because I think they can be cliched and boreing and seldom provide a good platform for the bands themselves. Insted I want to make my writeing and graphics as interesting and inivotive as possible, and to continue with the idea by having a flexi of a band I especialy like and can sympathise with, and giving them a page or two to acompany the flexi, to this end the next copy of TG will have a flexi in it by an exelant London Anarchist punk band call 'CONFLICT' the title of the song is 'Crazy Governments', also I intend to include patches, and maybe stickers. It should be out in September, and I'm hopeing for a sale of 10. 000 copys. In addition I'll soon be getting a duplicateing machine, so I hope to do a smaller more conventional magazine, as wel as doing leaflets and pamphlets and possibly other copies zines for as reasonable price as I can. I don't care if TG only comes out once or twice a year, as long as the end product is good and makes an impact, although the unecessary printing delays are very irritateing, and have bugged TG recently. I'd love to have my own litho.

I was very influanced by early punk as a rebellious movment, although I now prefer to write in a 'non alighned' way as far as so-called 'youth culture' goes cos I think they're all a pile of shit to con the arse of people and encourage mindlessness and needless aggro for the participants, and mony, money, money for musical establishment, such as the record companys, papers, cloths makers and so on ad nauseam.

I like practicaly any form of music as long as the particular example of the music is good of its kind, and honestly done, and that includes things like jazz and classical music as well as the more usualy talked about kinds of of music like punk, reggae, funk, and so on.

My favourite bands/musicians are; Sex Pistols and Clash and early punk in general, John Lennon, some reggae, especialy dub reggae, P.I.L., good disco, Crass, Poison Girls, Throbbing Gristle, John Williams, some oriental music, Elgar, Vaughn Williams, Mussorgsky, Pachabel, Handle, prokofiev, and many others. My Misical dislikes are; practicaly everything in the charts and T.OT.P., especialy moronic Oi Oi-ism and so-called futureist shit, and also all the usual pulp like abba, etc, yours, M.V.D. (Mike)'

Like issue #3, TG#4 is jam-packed - practically every inch of page space is utilised. Excellent articles/interviews featuring a seminal bunch of artists: The Eratics, Heretics, Rubella Ballet, Epileptics, Materialschlact, and Mick Duffield offers an extensive breakdown of his film Autopsy. Penny Rimbaud writes, 'Following the 8/9/79 Conway Hall Agro', and elsewhere Mike offers comments on that ill-fated gig. Lots more Mike musings on, 'Willy Whitelaw, Prison and You and Me', R.A.R., Yugoslavian punk, Tribalism and Propaganda Press. Reviews of The Monochrome Set, Poison Girls, Crass, The Feelies, The Pack, Spizz Energi, The Door & Window, Rondos, and Rainbirds. Poetry from Melanie and Annie Anxiety. Also collage, lots of fanzine and book reviews + lyrics and artworks from the featured bands. Superb stuff throughout.

Ok, so I've done a bit of feeling about and I have it on good authority, Toxic Graffitti #3 was the first TG - Mike Diboll's earlier effort was titled No Real Reason - I often wondered about that '(inc. N.R.R.)'. N.R.R. ran to 2 editions - TG#3 includes details of Mike's encounter with the police and the seizure of N.R.R.#3. Elsewhere there are nice extended interviews with Crass and Poison Girls - top flight stuff. Also, encounters with The Wall and Pentax. Articles on: the Birmingham Punk Scene (The Prefects, Anti Social, Steel Pulse, Mosiah + more) by Nick Alatti; My (MVD's) Anarchy; Police Harassment; British Fascism (NF)/Institutional Racism, and the Diary of a Nobody (Pope bashing). There's a neat little fanzine round-up, and reviews of 7"s by The Visitors, The Ruts, The Clash, Hollywood Brats, 4 Alternatives EP (Joe Public, The Numbers, X-Certs, 48 Hours), Barry Andrews, Essential Logic, Penetration, and The Smirks. Excellently narky throughout.

Toxic Graffity was definitely one of the more thought-provoking productions - I'll not say fanzine as that clearly misrepresents this publication - TG main man, Mike Diboll referred to an earlier issue as 'THE SHITZINE' - and latterly termed TG an 'anarcho-punk agit-art magazine'. Anyway, this 'special arty-farty benefit issue' is quite a radical departure from the earlier TG A4 format - the profits from it were to be channelled into production of lithoed TGs - sadly, those never materialised. Mike explains the rational and the tussle with Better Badges in the editorial of this issue - & for an extended lowdown see the fascinating TG post over on Kill Your Pet Puppy - be sure to check out the ensuing comments in which Mike and Joly (BB) go some way towards patching-up their rift.

I can't quite fathom the numbering sequence of TG - I have issues #3, #4, #5 (2 slightly different editions), & #6 - now, Mike says he produced 5 issues - do the variations on issue #5 count as 2 or were there issues preceding #3? There is mention in #3 of it being 'belated', so I'm guessing there were earlier issues. Any info gratefully received. At any rate, I'll be posting them all here - you lucky people.

Competition Time

As promised, since this is the first, albeit late, anniversary ee posting I'm giving away a copy of TG #6 - bear in mind that this was an entirely DIY edition and was limited to, I think, 200 copies - quite unlike the preceding issue which, in no small part due to the inclusion of a Crass flexi disc, sold something in the region of 10, 000 copies. To cop hold of it, check the ee collage masthead - I update it now and again - on this occasion I've added 5 artists/groups that clearly have no place on this blog - the first person to spot the greatest number of these erroneous acts gets the goods. Finding them all will be quite tricky and comments will be moderated until the winner is announced a week hence. Good luck.

Lee notes here that this is his twelfth production within 4 years - and going on the work seen here, that's gotta be a goodly oeuvre. Like Anathema, SPP is stuffed with poetry, musings and collage, with contributions from Kim and Neil + a fantastically extensive interview with Poison Girls' Lance, Richard and Vi. Excellent stuff.

More cogitations from Lee on topics often derisively dismissed as 'the usual issues' (generally by types who talk of the right wing this, and left wing that - blind proponents of what has become little more than an act of mass mesmerism - an illusion of choice pitting people one against the other, divided and ruled - whilst dark market forces, whom all ultimately serve, grin with greedy glee...), at any rate, those 'usual issues' are still relevant today and the more that air them the better.

Anathema #2 features an interview with Andy T, poetry, collage, fanzine round-up, The Mob lyrics + pieces on factory fodder, wonky civilisation, old age, gender conditioning, personal revolution, the Falklands war, machismo, insincere celebrity + contributions from Mandi, Paul A, Gerrard (Anabolic Steroids). Very feint in parts - 2 pages inverted in original corrected for ease of reading.

Solid stuff here from Lee (Stockton-on-Tees) - I think there were just 2 editions produced, both in 1982 [corrections always welcome]. Anathema was Lee's second effort, having earlier delivered Kiss the Earth, and latterly, Spitting Pretty Pikktures. Anathema is a series of astute rants, essays and poetry grappling with politics, feminism, consumerism, socialisation, torture, animal liberation, consumerism, religion, machismo, mental health, and the occult. Great contributions from Amanda M, Andy T, and Vanessa L. #1 includes an excellent 8 page interview with Crass and part 2 of a Poison Girls interview. Unfortunately this copy is missing pages 32-40 - if anybody can provide those it'd be greatly appreciated.

Freedom Anarchy Change oK: at least I think that's the origin of the title. At any rate, it's a great fanzine. FACK #5 was David and Juley's first foray into self publication, produced as it was on their recently acquired duplicator - a 'bit scrappy and badly organised' is how they describe their effort - presumably on account of it being a mix of single/double sided printing on a variety of papers. If only they'd known, such quirks add oodles of appeal: taking this fanzine apart and sifting through its pages of varying weights and finishes has been yet another opportunity to admire the determination and verve of the DIY wonderkids. Other titles baring the D&J imprint include Defiant Pose and Not So Brave & elsewhere, Mick Slaughter cites FACK as an inspiration for his Obituary. We're From Bradford

Now then, at last here's the much threatened Bradford Mega Post - a partial round-up of fanzines associated with the Wool City - kicking off aptly enough with a huge treat - the full [ahem] run of Wool City Rocker - Bradford's first fanzine! Do not be alarmed by the legend - 'Rock Scene Magazine' - the venerability of WCR will become clear. WCR was an admirable venture espousing and actively facilitating the DIY ethic throughout its 14 issue run (winter '79-summer '81) - collectively an invaluable social document of the period. Nick Toczek and Kay Russell (Ulterior Motives) jointly edited issues 1&2 but thenceforth Nick was at the helm. I'll not attempt to list all Nick's work here - there's shed loads of it - though I will note that his pre-WCR activity included editorship of the poetry journal, The Little Word Machine - he's since gone on to publish a rake of poetry volumes for adults and children - My & My Poems, Hogs 'n' Dogs 'n' Slugs 'n' Bugs, Number Number Cut a Cucumber, and The Wreckage - that scratches the surface - track down his Selfish Men CD for an excellent selection of his poetry. Apart from Ulterior Motives Nick has been involved in many musical projects, both performing and promoting - not least the fabulous Britanarchist LP (new volume due out shortly). Nick remains something of a globetrotting workaholic - travelling far and wide to demonstrate his craft and facilitate workshops in far flung corners of the world. When resident in the City Nick can be heard on his BCB radio show, InTOCZEKated. At any rate, WCR was consistently excellent. Offering: fantastically comprehensive gig listings; insightful interviews and profiles; impartial reviews; and practical information about gigging/recording (Band Aid - prefiguring Geldof/Ure). Nick, in characteristically declamatory manner, ever championed and cajoled, jostled for and boasted about Bradford. As the lad said,

'You've Gotta Shout!'

...and a big shout goes out to Johna, Nick & Troy - nice one lads.

A wonderful little fanzine this, puerile, snotty and knowing. Mostly the work of Andy Ashton [Chronic, (Distort - here with Anti System's Phil Dean) & some], Andy Farrow [Living Dead + Far North Supremo...], Aky Nawaz [Violation, Southern Death Cult...Fundamental], with insightful/silly contributions from an assortment of Bradford punks. I put the magazine together with the same 'back to basics' approach as the music that I was to feature. The main text, if you could call it that, was typed out on an old children's typewriter that my parents had bought for me as a Christmas present when I was about ten. The titles and the limited 'graphics' I scrawled out with a black felt tipped pen. It was raw, to say the least, but it put across the punk message perfectly. It celebrated the DIY ethic but was also representative of the very best that I could do. Even in the first issue I was identifying punk as a scene separate from the rest of rock music, but because of my openness it could include reviews of my old favourites Blue Oyster Cult alongside obvious ravings about The Ramones.

Correspondents here have noted how prolific some of the fanzine writers were - on the ball and what not - Sniffin' Glue is the classic example - spanning july '76-sept '77 (15 issues, 1-12 [see editorial in this issue for details of the peculiar numbering]) Sniffin' Glue was a monthly record of the emergent scene - Mark Perry & Co's view true, but undoubtedly astute. Issue #12 has: an appreciation of Chiswick Records with bits on The Count Bishops, Vince Taylor, The 101'ers, The Gorillas, Rocky Sharpe & The Razors, Little Bob Story, The Radio Stars, The Radiators From Space, Skrewdriver, The Rings, Motorhead; a great Jill Furmanovsky shot of Joe Strummer; articles on Generation X and Sham 69; Kris Needs' A Night at the Vortex; vinyl reviews of Motorhead, The Fantells, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Roogaltor, Trinity, Dillinger, Prince Far I, John Cale, the Count Bishops, and lots of snazzy adverts. Marbled throughout with Danny Baker's witty prose.

I thoroughly recommend Sniffin' Glue: The Essential Punk Accessory - loads of background and reflection from Mark + a reprinted full run of the fanzine. Shop around and you should be able to score a copy for under £15 - well worth it.

Still, I'm pleased they 'patched it up' - Flux & Crass embarked upon a seminal collaboration - delivering a staggering salvo in Neu Smell and Strive to Survive. IC#2 features a great 5 page interview with UK Decay + a 4+ page encounter with the Milkmen. There's the Crass riposte to 6MW + decent pieces on Girls At Our Best and Charge. 7"S - 6MW, The Cravats, Dead Kennedys, Methodishca Tune, Girls At Our Best, Wah Heat, Demon, Grace, Discharge; News on Crass, Another Pretty Face, Poison Girls, Delta 5, The Fall, 4AD, Fresh Records, Clay Records (3 quarter page) + a piece in opposition to British membership of NATO. Excellent stuff throughout.

The Nicky & The Dots comp is on hold - next up as kind of punctuation mark I'll be giving away a Sniffin' Glue. Just thought I'd prepare you for having your head done in by another fiendish challenge.

I Know it's untrendy to be a London based fanzine, but we don't give a fuck about what's trendy and what's not trendy. This is our second edition of a fanzine last time we were called Music Works but now we don't like that name and so we've changed it to Intensive Care as you will have noticed by looking at the front cover.

So, Intensive Care is Kevin and Cram's second foray into fanzine production and a nice one it is too. Where the likes of R&T opted to cram every inch of page space with info/image, IC goes for the sparse look, and again I reckon it works well with some great use of graphics. Issue #1 includes the most extensive interview with 6 Minute War I've ever seen. Undoubtedly a fine band were 6MW - there's no denying their dedication to the DIY ethic. Yet, whilst reasonable in parts, overall their attacks on Crass were just tiresome - I don't think I've read an interview with 6MW in which they don't stick in the boot. At any rate, Kevin and Cram were careful enough to offer Crass the opportunity to respond to the criticism - which they do in IC#2 - so that'll be the next up. Issue #1 also has a piece on TV as brainwashing, IC charts + 7"s - Athletico Spizz 80, Delta 5, Freeze, Crass/Poison Girls.

There's plenty of info about R&T and its creator, Tony Drayton, on the web - not least the fine Kill Your Pet Puppy website, structured around Tony's equally fine second fanzine of the same name. It's high time we had an In The City. I've got a fair few of these to post and I'll do them occasionally. Definitely one of the more attractive fanzines was ITC - the Poison Girls' pages in here are superb looking - some nice use of colour. But it's the written content that really made it - loads of credit to Peter Gilbert and Francis Drake. Given his ubiquity at the time this surprisingly is the first fanzine posted on EE to feature Adam Ant on the cover. Issue #13 also has: LPs - Crass (full page), Augustus Pablo, Creation Rockers Vols. 1-6 (VA), Rebel Music (VA), Punishment of Luxury, Talking Heads, Earcom 2 Comp', Cabaret Voltaire, The Carpettes, Poison Girls, Avon Calling (Bristol Comp), This Heat, The Slits, The Damned; Poetry - review of Annie Anxiety's, Eyes Of The Blind; Letters (incl 1 from Steve Ignorant in response to a query about Crass' advocacy of anarchy); Live - The Adverts/Cowboys International/Cuddly Toys, The Ruts/The Pack; ITC charts + 1 page The Ramones competition results article.

I'm gonna slap on a Strangled. Partly for the pleasure of seeing it on the blog, but mainly as an excuse to point you here where pdfs of all 9 issues of Strangled volume 1 can be viewed.

Strangled was the work of Tony Moon and Alan Edwards. Moon is credited with production of Sideburns fanzine (4 issues) - notably, the December '76 issue featured the much copied Playing in the band diagram - can anybody pluck that one out of the ether? Wouldn't it be pleasing to see some online Sideburns......? Anyway, Issue 8 of Strangled has Kaine Kinetics; interviews with David Thomas (Pere Ubu), Hugh Cornwell, JJ Burnel, and George Melly + editorial, bits on cannabis legalisation, video revolution, news, and a HC cartoon.'

A big treat here for Clash fans - Jonh Ingham's stylish London's Burning. It's a very nifty piece indeed with some fantastic collage work. Apart from this wonderful fanzine Ingham is credited with conducting the first Sex Pistols interview (published in Sounds, 24 April '76), writing the Rough Trade Newsletter, and penning many freelance pieces about the emergent Punk scene for papers such as Sounds and NME. Jonh writes on- you can read him in MOJO, the Word, Uncut and other publications.

Ah, the 'Positive Punk' credo as voiced by Richard North:

'It's a huge collective force that we can call the new positive punk - a re-evaluation and rejuvenation of the ideals that made the original outburst so great, an intensification of and expansion of that ethos of individuality, creativity and rebellion. The same buzz that burned our streets in '76/'77 is happening again'.

So, 'Positive Punk' was sold largely as an antidote to the doom and gloomongery of the Anarcho scene. I always thought it a bit odd myself - I mean, whilst it's true that there was a fair degree of 'moaning and groaning', the Anarchos were by and large a galvanising force. After all, Ian Astbury, of 'Positive Punk' vanguard The Southern Death Cult, drew huge inspiration from his days following Crass/roadying for Poison Girls. Nah, too much of a whiff of the marketing man about the whole notion. Anyway, this issue of Artificial Life also features The Pastels, a decent piece on Criminal Damage Records and a cracking little interview with The Redskins. Issue 2 includes a 1 page review of Futurama 2 + plugs for The Southern Death Cult, Carmel, Tony Fletcher's Apocalypse, and a comical chat with Andy Partridge.

Penny Rimbaud, Demoncrats

Gee's artwork and Penny's writing brilliantly complimented one & other in these publications - image and word coalescing to frightening effect. Demoncrats (p. 5 in this issue) is a fine example of the coupling. True, they're citing themselves. Nevertheless, Demoncrats is one of Penny's finer poems and stands up no problem in this context; the chilling Reality Asylum painting/news-clipping crucifix juxtaposition an integral hub around which the dreadful text is wrapped. IA#3 is excellent throughout. The last issue to see the light - though many of the images for issues 4 & 5 can be seen in Gee's, Crass Art and Other Pre-Postmodernist Monsters [sorely in need of a reprint].

International Anthem #2 was the Domestic Violence edition. Penny's essay, Fray Bentos & Other Personnel, constitutes the bulk of the writing - its mix of visceral hyperreality and absurdist drama making for fascinating, though somewhat disconcerting reading. The voices of Eve Libertine and Joy De Vivre can be discerned clearly. Naturally, Gee's collage and gouache creations are fabulous throughout - though telling which is which is no mean feat. One thing that has long perplexed is the lack of recognition Gee enjoys. It is doubtful that the artist craves attention - after all, no degree of acclaim improves art. But it is irksome when good art is overlooked. To moan further, Black Dog publishers issued in 2008 a lavish book titled, Collage. There's not a single mention of Gee in that book - a shocking neglect of an artist whom sits comfortably alongside Hoch, Rauschenburg, Hamilton, Stezaker, Rosler and Linder. Whinge over.

This is the business - International Anthem #1, the Education edition is a phenomenal production. The brainchild of Gee Vaucher, it offers a wealth of the artist's work. The skill of the hand at play is staggering. 5 editions were compiled - just 3 were published. Utilizing finances earned from illustrating in more corporate publications, Gee, based in New York at the time, initiated the 'nihilist newspaper for the living' as an 'alternative vehicle' for divergent thought and expression. Beneficent Crass would go on to shovel untold £thousands of wind fallen lucre into well worthy causes; encouraging and nurturing and giving succour up to and beyond their self assigned 1984 sell by date. Penny Rimbaud's searing essay, 'Crass at the Roxy, he falls articulating on the skinned dog', pretty much lays the foundation for the project. Great stuff.

The final edition of The Impossible Dream starkly delivers - apart from the splash of red on the cover it's black and white. In fact it couldn't be clearer. And a quarter century down the line nothing's really changed - the inhumans' needle keen cynicism permits them to extract still the price of grain and spend others' blood. Inspiring as they are, Vi's lovely 'words written in trust' are easily drowned-out by the well-drilled 'scintillilating stratagem' Pinter spoke of.

Nevertheless, a great artifact: Vi as ever; Lance and Domino photomontage + contributions from Andrea Dworkin and William Burroughs.

'In early 1981 I was purposely taken to see the Poison Girls, a mixed-gender anarcho-punk revivalist band. The lead singer, Vi Subversa, was a minor cult - a feisty, powerful middle-aged woman. Some of her songs were like raw Music Hall anthems with highly charged political lyrics and she growled them out to barmy armies of gobbing kids, twenty-five years her junior.

I'm not your fucking mother
I'm not your fucking whore
I'm not your little sister
Or the girl next door

Poisons had just broken their long association supporting punk extremists Crass, were about to headline a nationwide anti-nukes tour, and were looking for an innovative support act - a difficult job in difficult circumstances - but also, as it turned out, in excellent company. But that's another story'.

I got a copy of The Impossible Dream #2 in 1981 at the Bradford Queen's Hall leg of the 'anti nukes tour': Poison Girls, The Mob, and The Southern Death Cult played - the astounding comic Tony Allen was on the bill but didn't perform. These glossy A3 affairs certainly were luscious productions - buggers to get home from gigs in one neat piece though. Clearly, scale and sheen aren't the sole attributes of The Impossible Dream #2. The visual content throughout is striking and woozingly affective lyricism teems from the pages. For light relief Lance interviews Penny Rimbaud to tittersome effect.

And so it goes, 30 years on, the inhumans still hold sway. New confusions augment the old and violence is deliberate as ever. A question arises: might Poison Girls' and Pigs For Slaughter' ethics ever have been wed without their being the progenitors of newer confusions and yet more deliberate violence? A resolutely past tense poser there for you. Here, there's resignation: the inhuman grip is just too fast; prising free is an Impossible Dream.

At any rate, the Poison Girls were exceptional - their collaborative years with Crass and Annie Anxiety made for a compellingly inspirational package that steadfastly refused to be branded. The live manifestation of this triumvirate was utterly awesome to behold - leaving in its a wake a wealth of gorgeous publications and printed matter. Gonna get as much of it as possible up here starting with the run of The Impossible Dream. 'The perils which afflict a revolutionary communist surrounded by punks can be most eloquently expressed when a cold night in 1982 is summoned from memory: six bands were to play that night and Conflict were top of the bill. Myself and a colleague from the Wapping Autonomy Centre, Ian Slaughter, were irritated to the point of petrol bombs. About sums it up really - Pigs For Slaughter raged against inertia, taking a direct challenge to the 'scene' that spawned it. Stuff on The Apostles, A.Y.F., disrupting Hyde Park CND Rally, the SPG, trashing Macdonalds, Autonomy Centre News, and Screen Printing made easy.

16 tightly packed angry pages from Ian Slaughter et al. Pigs For Slaughter was an in-house organ for the short lived [August 1981-March 1982] Wapping Autonomy Centre. Risque activism tips: good stuff on grafitti, May Day, The Anarchist Centre; reviews + a searching interview with Crass.

'PIGS FOR SLAUGHTER was a fanzine produced in 1981-1982 by Ian Slaughter, a staunch ally of The Apostles in their early days. It bacame infamous within the otherwise pacifist anarcho-punk scene for its support of revolutionary violence, guerilla tactics and direct action, coupled with an overt criticisn of Crass and their ilk. Many of the graphics from Pigs For Slaughter were later used as artwork on The Apostles' record sleeves. The Apostles song "Pigs For Slaughter" was written in tribute to the fanzine and was later covered by Oi Polloi. The Anarchist Youth Federation was organised by a number of those involved with Pigs For Slaughter, The Apostles and the Anarchy Centres before being absorbed into the embryonic CLASS WAR group. The A.Y.F. symbol was a recurring image on all Apostles releases.'

I only got 2 issues of New Crimes but saw others - all were excellent efforts. The fanzine was produced by Graham Burnett (Jah Ovjam) in Southend On Sea during 1980-1983. The '+ MORE' alone in here [pieces on Flack, The Instant Automatons, Primal Chaos, Cold War, AWOL, Part 1, The Apostles; gig reviews of Sinyx/Black Flag, Crass/Poison Girls/Flux/Annie Anxiety, U2/Altered Images, Flux, The Slits, The Revillos, Discharge/Exploited/Anti Pasti/Chron Gen/ The Wretched; record reviews, and 2 fanzine round ups], would be enough to fill your average fanzine of the time.

Here's a great issue of Cobalt Hate for you. Product of another benefit gig involving Crass and Poison Girls - these C.H. fellows sure had some generous support: and they repaid in spades with this fanzine. Imaginative and irreverent as ever with excellent use of colour. Lots on Dead Kennedys, Epileptics, Honey Bane (page inverted in original flipped in pdf); gig and record reviews + more Charlie's Angels piss-takery with Jowlie's Robots.

Can anybody out there fill the gap where C.H. #2 should be?

Brilliantly chaotic one here for a kick-off. A big favourite. Sharp, succinct and witty stuff from Welwyn. Bits on Crass, Poison Girls, Rondos, Epileptics, Rubella Ballet; sniping at the Clash and a withering review of UK Decay/Pneumania. Still, UK Decay proved magnaminous enough, hosting as they did, in December 1979, a Cobalt Hate benefit gig featuring themselves, Crass and Poison Girls. For more see here.
